02 / What do we do?
03 / Membership
We aim to proactively engages the student body, provide the fundamental skills and knowledge required for research, and bridge the gap between medical as well as dental students and physician-scientists for a simpler and more equal access to research at Barts and The London.
You can buy the membership for just 1£!

Our aims
Additionally, we provide support for various research-related academic tasks set by Barts and The London in the form of lectures and workshops.

BARS also aims to generate our very own BARS Research Exchange, a platform that will feature research projects from physicians and scientist of the nearby Trusts and Institutes for a better access to research.
BARS are affiliated with the National Student Association of Medical Research (NSAMR), a national student-led organisation that aims to encourage and support students in pursuit of a career in academic medicine.

Meet the team
Davina Jugnarain
President
She's a 4th year with a previous BSc in Biochemistry from Imperial, so is that one weirdo who didn't hate FunMed! She has presented research in endocrinology and infectious disease at international conferences. In her spare time she enjoys petting all the dogs, weightlifting and watercolours!
Christine Joerres
Vice-president
She is a 3rd year GEP student, having previously studied MSci Biochemistry in Manchester. She has conducted research in atherosclerosis biochemistry, antibiotic resistance genetics and neuroscience, and is currently running a COVID-19 clinical trial. Outside of research, she loves cycling, running, plants, feminism and the environment!
Saima Syed
Treasurer
She is a 3rd year medical student. During her A Levels, she conducted a critical review on the use of nano-scale biomaterials, such as graphene, in the body to solve medical challenges such as cancer and neurological diseases, which entailed meeting leading researchers at laboratories in Manchester. Her other research interests include the social determinants of health. In her spare time, she enjoys playing football, binge-watching a good series (currently Peaky Blinders) and having a good time with friends.
Linnuel Pregil
Secretary
She is a second-year medical student who did a Biomedical Science degree before going into medicine. Her undergraduate research involved the use of luminescence immunoprecipitation assays to detect antibodies in Type 1 diabetes, specifically focusing on the difference in prevalence between Asian and European patients. She is also involved in the first trial of rapid PCR testing for COVID19 in the UK. In her spare time, she loves illustrating, painting and running.
Sarah Gaier
Clinical Representative
She is currently a third year medical student. Her first experience with research was working with E. Coli in a lab at Yale. Since then, she’s been involved in a few different research projects, but is specifically interested in forensic medicine. In her free time, she binge-watches Sherlock on repeat, and enjoys art and reading good books.
Yanmin Li
Academic Officer
He is a 3rd-year medical student. He has completed a BSc and MRes at York and Imperial respectively. He has worked in the field of immunology investigating leukocyte trafficking and in structural biology, optimising crystallography methods facilitating rational drug design. In his spare time, he enjoys the feeling of wind in his hair and catching Pokémon. He wants be the very best like no one ever was!
Marta Komosa
Conference Lead
She’s a 3rd year medical student. Last year she was involved in organising Barts and the London 9th National Undergraduate Surgical Conference. In high school, she has engaged in organising local conferences, charity events, and international equestrian competitions. In her free time, she enjoys horse riding and creating any kind of art (but her heart really beats for anatomical sculptures and calligraphy).
Karolina Wieczorek
Publicity Officer
She is a second-year medical student responsible for the promoting the society. Currently, she works as a tutor, helping high school students with writing research projects. At university, she was volunteering with children and training water polo. In her free time she enjoys travelling, swimming, art and design as well as gardening!
Aleksandra Laguna
Pre-clinical Representative
She is our second-year medical student. In secondary school she designed a research project on how planting spinach and brown mustard can help children in the mining region of Silesia live more lead and cadmium-free lives, was like ‘woah that even works!’ and ever since she grew fond of research. In her spare time she listens to ‘Ghostbusters’ on repeat for 7 hours, bakes fruity summer cakes and rewatches ‘Scrubs’ for the 3rd time.
